Feeling Lucky!

We are learning about St. Patrick's Day, Ireland, and legends of Leprechauns.

We are learning to write to give directions, or steps in a process.  This week, we will write a how-to piece on making a Leprechaun mask.  Of course, our favorite part of this project was the PAINTING!  And, since Mrs. Broome takes us on the long road always, we learned about color mixing on the way.  We learned that red, yellow and blue are the primary colors, the "first colors," from which the other colors are created.... just like our primary school is our "first school."  We mixed red and yellow to create our orange paint for the Leprechaun masks.

Are these not just the cutest little Leprechauns you've ever seen???

Of course, you CAN'T learn about Ireland without talking potatoes.  We had so much fun with our "Potato Friday."  Thanks for sending in the potatoes!  We couldn't have done it without them!

We drew pictures of potatoes.

We measured potatoes

We started a potato science project.

We read a book about a big, BIG potato

And, of course, we COOKED potatoes!
We made our own, homemade potato chips.
This is how we did it:
1.  Wash potatoes very well.
2.  Slice the potatoes into very thin slices.

3.  Get a pot and some oil.

4.  Heat the oil.  When it is very hot, add potato slices.

5.  Once browned, remove potatoes from oil.  Drain and add salt.

We gave them 2 thumbs up!!!!
And of course, we wanted to take some home at the end of the day (I bet those potatoes didn't make it home!)

Oh, one more thing.......

We're pretty sure that we're going to catch a Leprechaun!

First grade is SO MUCH FUN!!!!!

We played "Time Move-it!" using our snowman clocks.  Learning is SO MUCH FUN!!!

MORE Winter Fun:

We have been learning about animals all year.  For the past couple of weeks, we have been learning about ways that animals survive through the winter.  Some birds migrate, but others have to find food throughout the winter.  We made bird feeders to help keep their bellies full!

Directions for making bird-feeders:

1. mix boiling water, unflavored gelatin, and birdseed.   We used 2 boxes (8 packets) of gelatin and 2 cups of water and 1 bag of birdseed.

2.  Press the mixture into greased cookie cutters. (We used paper plates with a sheet of wax paper and plastic spoons)

3.  Push a straw all the way through to create a hole.  Leave the straw until the mixture hardens.

4.  Once the mixture hardens, remove it from the cookie cutter.  Remove the straw.  Put yarn or ribbon through the hole and tie it up to hang on a tree limb.

And, of course, we wrote the directions to share with our families.  This could be a fun project to do at home!  I am SO PROUD of the writing these smart boys and girls are producing!  We have some talented writers in this beehive!!!

We are SO PROUD of Monil!!!!  He is the FIRST student in our school to complete through level Z of Rocket Math.  To pass a level, students have to CORRECTLY complete a LOT of addition problems within just 1 minute!  Monil has passed 26 LEVELS!!!!!  WOW!!!!  To celebrate and honor his achievement, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. R. gave us a pizza party today!!!
